SIGMET (Significant Meteorological Information) is a critical weather advisory containing urgent information about the occurrence or expected occurrence of specific en-route weather phenomena which directly impact the structural integrity and flight safety of all aircraft operations.
Major En-Route Weather Hazards
Under international aviation standards, SIGMET advisories are strictly reserved and issued for high-impact atmospheric events:
- Severe Turbulence: Intense atmospheric disturbances, including Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), not associated with active convective cloud systems.
- Severe Icing: Heavy atmospheric moisture causing rapid ice build-up on wings and control surfaces, severely degrading aircraft performance.
- Severe Thunderstorms: Large, organized storm cells with embedded squall lines, heavy hail, or severe wind shear.
- Volcanic Ash: High-altitude ash plumes composed of abrasive silicates that can damage jet engines, scour windshields, and clog pitot-static systems.
- Tropical Cyclones: Massive convective storm systems generating extreme winds, intense precipitation, and severe turbulence over vast regional flight areas.
SIGMET Validity and Lifespan
Due to the rapidly evolving nature of severe atmospheric conditions, strict validity standards are enforced:
- Standard Advisories: Typically valid for a maximum duration of 4 hours.
- Volcanic Ash & Tropical Cyclones: Due to their massive geographic scale and slow dissipation, these advisories can remain valid for up to 6 hours, frequently accompanied by visual forecast models.
